Ernest Hemingway's Last Home
Sun Valley, Idaho
Overview
Many associate Ernest Hemingway’s residence with Cuba or Key West, but the author’s last home was actually in Ketchum, Idaho. He lived there with his wife in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The arid climate kept his manuscripts from the tolls of humidity, and hunting and fishing along Silver Creek Preserve, which originally drew him to the area, kept him entertained. Hemingway particularly enjoyed duck hunting for mallards, pintails and other birds. In 1961, he took his life in this house and was buried nearby.
Now visitors and Hemingway fans enjoy visiting the house and viewing the related artifacts. The Nature Conservancy maintains the Hemingway House, which was bequeathed to it after Hemingway’s wife passed away. Not just a building, the surrounding Silver Creek Preserve protects 850 acres of scenic land.
