GOLDEN HORSESHOE GOLF CLUB

The Golden Horseshoe Golf Club has been named one of the “Top 100 Resort Courses in America” by Golfweek Magazine, and its three courses are all Audubon sanctuaries, making them peaceful patches of paradise.

The Gold Course was designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr. It is one of the best examples of traditional golf course architecture in the world. Opened in 1963, Jones Sr. called the Gold Course his “finest design.” In 1998, Rees Jones was the architect of a course renovation that remained faithful to the original design but expanded the appeal of the course for higher-handicap players while simultaneously lengthening the course from the back tees.

THE WILLIAMSBURG WINERY, LTD.

The Williamsburg Winery is located on the 300 acre farm of Wessex Hundred. Passed over for the settlement of Jamestown just down the river, this was one of the first plots of land purchased in the New World. In 1985 a couple began planting grapes in its rich soil, and three years later the beloved Governor’s White was released.

It is well worth a stop for wine tours and tastings, and two onsite restaurants serve classy, delicious dishes that live up to the farm’s rich heritage. At Café Provençal, Chef Ika Zaken elegantly plates meals of lean meats and fresh vegetables full of flavor. Take the path 100 yards farther for the Gabriel Archer Tavern. The tavern pairs incredible food with wine and a casual, homey setting. Sit in the Vineyard Room overlooking rows of Vidal grapes and order a French bread sandwich. You’ll taste gourmet countryside blossoming in every bite.

SHIELDS TAVERN

From seared salmon to barnyard chicken, the main courses are memorable. A great ode to the past is Ale-potted Beef. Set on a bed of rosemary-garlic mashed potatoes, this dish simmers beef, carrots, celery, pearl onions and forest mushrooms in ale. CHRISTIANA CAMPBELL’S TAVERN

Christiana Campbell’s Tavern is the ultimate colonial experience. George Washington himself once praised its seafood. Maintaining an 18th-century vibe with pewter candlesticks, reproduction wooden chairs and framed prints, it’s easy to imagine the political discussions that once floated over the aroma of homemade cornbread.

Many of the dishes came straight out of colonial cookbooks. Scallops, crab, shrimp and fish are paired with strange but traditional vegetable medleys that make the white and blue china pop with color.
