KETCHUM SUN VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY HERITAGE & SKI MUSEUM

Locals and visitors alike will be fascinated by the exhibits at the Ketchum Sun Valley Historical Society Heritage & Ski Museum. Learn how Ernest Hemingway is connected to the Wood River Valley and how the area’s economy changed from a dependence on silver and lead mining to a top sheep raising force. Exhibits highlight Ketchum’s national award for sending the most men per capita to serve in WWI and for supplying ski troops during WWII. Perhaps the most interesting exhibits focus on the history of skiing in the region and the Olympic skiers who called the Sun Valley their home.

WHITE CLOUDS

White Clouds may not be the most challenging or famous golf course in Sun Valley, but it’s the most breathtaking. Face north, south, east or west, and you’ll be faced with beauty. Its 360-degree view overlooks Bald Mountain, Dollar Mountain, the Pioneer Mountains, Devil’s Bedstead and the home of Earnest Hemingway. When it’s your turn and you have to put your eyes on the ball, you’ll want to watch out for sand traps and hills scattered throughout the nine holes. There’s a lot of risk and reward in the area’s newest course, but the owner of Sun Valley Resort said it best: “This is not all about golf.” Therefore, enjoy the view, as well as the game.

NORDIC SKIING AND SNOWSHOEING

Of course Sun Valley’s mountains provide excellent Alpine Skiing, but the area is also known for the best Nordic skiing terrain in America. Nordic describes skiing in which the heel of the boot is not fixed to the ski. This includes Cross country skiing, ski jumping and telemark skiing. Olympic training occurs here in “Nordic Town USA,” and you’ll find more than 200 kilometers of groomed Nordic trails. A fun alternative is snowshoeing, which used to be an essential means of transportation during winter months.

GALENA STAGE STOP CORRALS

During warmer months of the year, you can start a horse adventure from Galena Stage Stop Corrals in Ketchum. The steady gait of a horse will give you plenty of time to take in the towering pines and historic mining trails of the Smoky Mountains on a trail ride. All-day rides differ depending on the group’s request, but common stops include the historic twin cabins and a silver mine from the 1800s.

If horse riding isn’t appealing but you still want a similar experience, then a wagon ride might be perfect for you and your family. Hop on a horse-drawn wagon and take in the traditional mining roads of the Pioneer Mountains. Take it to the next level with a Cowboy Cookout at the end of your wagon ride. An old-fashioned dinner with S’mores around the fire will bring you back to the past – a combination of the 1800s and your childhood. Whether you try to lasso a rope around your girlfriend or tell ghost stories around the campfire, this is one day when cell phones and iPads are not allowed!

A LA MODE

This place is classically adorable. A La Mode’s sky blue walls are lined with jars or colorful candies, and wood and marble counters are just inviting you to pull up a stool. Maybe an ice cream parlor isn’t the first thing you think of after breathing the brisk winter air, and they realize that. That’s why, in addition to deliciously blended shakes and ice cream cones, A La Mode offers specialty cocoas and hot sundaes. Its steamy cocoa comes in a variety of creations, including Huckleberry, Dreamsicle, Smore, Peanut Butter Cup and Peppermint Stick. And if it is a hot summer day, then a root beer float will certainly satisfy your thirst.

THE ROUNDHOUSE

If you’re in love with the mountains, you don’t have to leave to eat. The Roundhouse is Baldy’s only restaurant, and an established one at that. It’s been serving guests from its cozy station since 1939. It’s easy to get to too – just hop on the Roundhouse Gondola!

Roundhouse lunches don’t mess around. Open up wide for a Bison Burger, Elk Salkbocca or Arctic Char. Averell’s Fondue is tempting too. Order wild mushrooms or shrimp for extra dipping.

If you make it up the mountain for dinner, expect elegant fare. The Quail Fricassee is paired with sweet potato and cranberry hash, and the Sustainable Farm Raised White Sturgeon is complemented by onion and duck fat cabbage, smoked bacon, aligot potatoes and herb salad. Since you’re enjoying yourself, order a glass or Johnny Walker Black, Samuel Adams winter lager or Pinot Noir from France.

THE GRILL AT KNOB HILL

Earthy tones and casual sophistication come together at The Grill at Knob Hill. This Sun Valley favorite has a menu of Northwest, European and Rocky Mountain dishes, and in the summertime, you can dine al fresco with green gardens and mountain peaks for a view.

The Grill has a significant bar bites and drink menu. The calamari, lollipop lamp chops and broiled shrimp are cooked to perfection, and vegetarian pizza pleases all. In the winter, order The Naughty Hot Teddy, a warm drink of Fireball cinnamon whiskey and agave nectar with a slice of orange. More refreshing is the Joyful Double: Absolut citron, St. Germain, grapefruit juice and a float of Prosecco. And the wine list is made to impress.

THE HAVEN

Heavenly food in a lime green school bus – that pretty much sums up The Haven, Ketchum’s premier food truck. Although it’s new to Sun Valley, food trucks have been all the rage in large cities across the country. You know the food is fresh and made with care, because the menu changes daily. Check out The Haven’s Facebook Page to see what’s current. You’ll read something like this: “Curry chicken and couscous wrap with roasted veggies, nuts, provolone, spinach, romaine, and side salad.” The owner’s specialty is gourmet grilled cheese, so comfort food could be in your parking lot! These parties are intimate affairs, where guests have the opportunity to mingle with the on-stage talent and see them perform. TRAILING OF THE SHEEP FESTIVAL

Shepherding isn’t just an ancient livelihood or a Biblical pastime. In fact, it’s a real part of Idahoan heritage. Every autumn, the award-winning Trailing of the Sheep Festival honors the tradition of sheep ranching in Idaho and the west. Every fall for 150 years, sheepherders in the region have been driving their sheep through the Wood River Valley, moving their herds from summer pastures in the mountains to milder lowland areas for winter grazing and lambing. The sheep used for the trials have only lived with their guardian sheepherder and dogs for months, so they provide the border collies with a unique challenge.

One of the highlights of the festival is the Sheep Parade. Onlookers witness 2,000 sheep waddle down Main Street in Ketchum! The main event is the sheepdog championship trials, but guests can also participate in gourmet cooking, felting and photography workshops. Peruvian and Oinkari Basque dancers entertain, as do Boise Highlander bagpipers. After attending sheep shearing, spinning and weaving demonstrations, you’ll get a real understanding of the art of sheepherding!

WAGON DAYS

Toward the end of each summer, Ketchum celebrates its past at Wagon Days with western style. With a weekend packed with activities, you’ll return home with a camera full of pictures and the strange desire to don a bonnet or cowboy hat.

The Big Hitch Parade is the main event. A non-motorized parade, a line of wagons, buggies and stagecoaches will move through town. The Grand Finale pulls out all the stops with Lewis Ore Wagons. Traditionally pulled by a 20-mule jerk line, these freight wagons are the best preserved and functioning ones in existence.

Between these two primary events, Ketchum becomes a town of square dancing, antique shows, rodeos, pancake breakfasts, car auctions, live music and crafts. Yeehaw!

HEMMINGWAY KETCHUM CEMETERY

Earnest Hemingway was buried in the unpretentious Ketchum Idaho Cemetery after he took his life in 1961. Toward the end, the author was diagnosed with a terminal illness that brought on a serious depression, even though this was a place he enjoyed. He had moved to Idaho to duck hunt along Silver Creek and store his manuscripts in an arid climate.

To reach the revered author’s grave, take Highway 75 north through Ketchum until it becomes Main Street. The cemetery and grave are open to the public, so access should be easy. You’ll find Hemingway’s granite-slab grave laying at the northeast corner beneath two sturdy evergreens.

BALD MOUNTAIN

Bald Mountain is located at the heart of Idaho within Sawtooth National Forest. It’s easily the major attraction and site in Sun Valley and Idaho, being the main destination for skiing and snowboarding in the area. It has more uphill capacity than any other ski area with 14 ski lifts. These service 75 runs, not including the more remote, untouched powdery snow that experienced skiers try to access. Its vertical drop is an impressive 3,400 feet. Even if you’re not into sports, this mountain is a beauty, both from afar and upon its summit.

REDFISH LAKE

If you want to spend some time on the water, then Redfish Lake is the spot. About 5 miles from Stanley, this alpine lake has clear waters that appear deep blue to teal in color. It’s part of Sawtooth National Recreation Area at the base of the Sawtooth Mountains so the view of trees and mountains seems infinite and untouched.

It looks more like a photo of Alaska than the backwoods of Idaho, and the area is closely tied to salmon as well. The sockeye breed used to flood the area so thick that the water was tinted red. The flow of salmon from the Pacific Ocean has slowed to a trickle now that sockeyes are an endangered species, but fly fishing for other fish is common. A marina at Redfish Lake Lodge rents out boats for recreation, and beaches allow for casual sunbathing. If the water is too chilly to enjoy, the area is also great for hiking. Regardless, the lake is worth a look and a photograph.

CRATERS OF THE MOON NATIONAL MONUMENT & PRESERVE

Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve is a national park covered in lava flows. Islands of cinder cones and sagebrush dot the land, and the high desert ecosystem will surprise you with its diversity of plants and animals. In 1923 a geologist recommended the area be preserved as a national monument when he discovered it to have the most recent example of a fissure eruption in America.

Apart from natural beauty and uniqueness, Craters of the Moon has also been the location of a number of historic happenings. In 1805, Lewis and Clark passed through on their way to the Pacific Ocean. A member of that same expedition got separated from his fellow fur trappers almost 30 years later and almost died crossing the Snake River Plain. In 1962, Tim Goodale led 1,905 emigrants with 338 wagons across an Oregon Trail cutoff.

CUSTER AND BONANZA

Custer and Bonanza are ghost towns with a past. In the 1800s, they were the most important mining towns in the Yankee Fork. These sister cities had the basics of a small western town – a school house, post office, jail and union hall. There was even a baseball team! But as the mining business went downhill, so did the towns. Now a few remote structures are left, waiting for visitors to spook at the faintest creak or wind. Stop by the museum in the old school house and the gift ship inside the Empire Saloon. Free gold panning demonstrations occur frequently. Picnic lunches are recommended.
