RAFTING WITH THE RIVER COMPANY

Look up The River Company if you want to have fun on Salmon River. Depending on the time of year, it provides family-style rafting, class IV raft trips, kayak trips and float boat fishing trips.

The Lunch Trip is a crowd pleaser. After an invigorating float down the river, you’ll pull off for a riverside lunch prepared by a chef. It’s all homemade, fresh and delicious. No detail is ignored either. Vegetarian and kid meals are available, and the company maintains a liquor license so you can buy a beer or wine before you embark on your journey.

GALENA STAGE STOP CORRALS

During warmer months of the year, you can start a horse adventure from Galena Stage Stop Corrals in Ketchum. The steady gait of a horse will give you plenty of time to take in the towering pines and historic mining trails of the Smoky Mountains on a trail ride. All-day rides differ depending on the group’s request, but common stops include the historic twin cabins and a silver mine from the 1800s.

If horse riding isn’t appealing but you still want a similar experience, then a wagon ride might be perfect for you and your family. Hop on a horse-drawn wagon and take in the traditional mining roads of the Pioneer Mountains. Take it to the next level with a Cowboy Cookout at the end of your wagon ride. An old-fashioned dinner with S’mores around the fire will bring you back to the past – a combination of the 1800s and your childhood. Whether you try to lasso a rope around your girlfriend or tell ghost stories around the campfire, this is one day when cell phones and iPads are not allowed!

KONDITOREI

At Konditorei, Executive Chef John Murcko plates beautiful dishes with European inspiration. The Austrian atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and its breakfasts will awaken your taste buds. After all, it is never too early for a Croque Madame! If you show up too late for Belgian Waffles, don’t be disappointed. Pumpkin Spatzel, Weiner Schintzel and Nutella Crepes will make up for it. Herb Salmon Salad is perfect for the diet conscious, too!

To tease you, the Redfish wrap or bowl is packed with wild salmon, feta cheese, cucumbers, Roma tomatoes, mixed greens and balsamic vinaigrette. The Caesar and The Cobb are both safe choices, and kid meals are all tasty options. Just Cheese and Grilled Teriyaki Chicken and Cheese quesadillas are both delicious, too!

Start with a foundation of baguette, wheat, sourdough or rye, and build it up from there with savory meet, fresh veggies, tasty cheeses and the perfect dressing.

A LA MODE

This place is classically adorable. A La Mode’s sky blue walls are lined with jars or colorful candies, and wood and marble counters are just inviting you to pull up a stool. Maybe an ice cream parlor isn’t the first thing you think of after breathing the brisk winter air, and they realize that. That’s why, in addition to deliciously blended shakes and ice cream cones, A La Mode offers specialty cocoas and hot sundaes. Its steamy cocoa comes in a variety of creations, including Huckleberry, Dreamsicle, Smore, Peanut Butter Cup and Peppermint Stick. And if it is a hot summer day, then a root beer float will certainly satisfy your thirst.

ZŌU 75

Zōu 75 is the trendiest destination for Asian fusion, sushi and martinis. Get started at the upscale martini/wine bar by ordering an Asian Pear Martini, Sake Cosmopolitan or True-Grit Margarita. Then sit down for a dinner of fresh fish flown in from Honolulu. Sink your fork into Miso-Glazed Salmon or balance a piece of octopus sashimi between your chop sticks. The Black Diamond roll is a spiral of spicy firecracker scallops, jicama, scallions and wasabi tobikko. Turned off by the word wasabi? Lobster Tempura rolls, packed with avocado and asparagus, deliver taste without the heat. And for guests who grimace at the mention of fish or raw, there’s a sushi-phobe menu! Doesn’t Togorashi Encrusted Niman Ranch Steak sound amazing?

THE ROUNDHOUSE

If you’re in love with the mountains, you don’t have to leave to eat. The Roundhouse is Baldy’s only restaurant, and an established one at that. It’s been serving guests from its cozy station since 1939. It’s easy to get to too – just hop on the Roundhouse Gondola!

Roundhouse lunches don’t mess around. Open up wide for a Bison Burger, Elk Salkbocca or Arctic Char. Averell’s Fondue is tempting too. Order wild mushrooms or shrimp for extra dipping.

If you make it up the mountain for dinner, expect elegant fare. The Quail Fricassee is paired with sweet potato and cranberry hash, and the Sustainable Farm Raised White Sturgeon is complemented by onion and duck fat cabbage, smoked bacon, aligot potatoes and herb salad. Since you’re enjoying yourself, order a glass or Johnny Walker Black, Samuel Adams winter lager or Pinot Noir from France.

THE GRILL AT KNOB HILL

Earthy tones and casual sophistication come together at The Grill at Knob Hill. This Sun Valley favorite has a menu of Northwest, European and Rocky Mountain dishes, and in the summertime, you can dine al fresco with green gardens and mountain peaks for a view.

The Grill has a significant bar bites and drink menu. The calamari, lollipop lamp chops and broiled shrimp are cooked to perfection, and vegetarian pizza pleases all. In the winter, order The Naughty Hot Teddy, a warm drink of Fireball cinnamon whiskey and agave nectar with a slice of orange. More refreshing is the Joyful Double: Absolut citron, St. Germain, grapefruit juice and a float of Prosecco. And the wine list is made to impress.

SUN VALLEY BREWERY AND CAFÉ

Founded in 1986 by Brew Master Gordon Gammell, Sun Valley Brewery and Café serves 12 fresh brews served on-site. Its menu boasts that 99.2% of the ingredients, by weight, are produced in Idaho. This selection includes the Sun Valley Blonde Pilsner, Flying Squirrel Stout and its original White Cloud Amber Ale. If you just aren’t a beer person, there’s a wine list too.

The appetizers are delicious. The Rude Wings pack a bite, the Tiger Won Tons have a dynamic sweet vs. sour flavor and the Veggie Quesadilla surprises you with chunks of grilled zucchini. With a long list of pizzas, cold sandwiches, pub dailies, soups, salads, steaks and pastas being made in the kitchen, you’ll definitely find something you love. Crab & Shrimp Burritos and Cashew Chicken Stir Fry aren’t your average brewery fare, so keep an open mind! (If you’d rather not, there’s an Angus Burger.)

The Black & Blue Burger, Greek Salad and Philly Cheese Steak are all classics, and Teriyaki Chicken Fettuccine mixes familiar flavors into a new dish. THE HAVEN

Heavenly food in a lime green school bus – that pretty much sums up The Haven, Ketchum’s premier food truck. Although it’s new to Sun Valley, food trucks have been all the rage in large cities across the country. You know the food is fresh and made with care, because the menu changes daily. Check out The Haven’s Facebook Page to see what’s current. You’ll read something like this: “Curry chicken and couscous wrap with roasted veggies, nuts, provolone, spinach, romaine, and side salad.” The owner’s specialty is gourmet grilled cheese, so comfort food could be in your parking lot! THE DUCHIN LOUNGE

The Duchin Lounge has been said to have the best live Jazz in town. A mature crowd gathers on the dance floor after sipping wine and nibbling on Portobello Fries as they sit on padded wooden chairs around marbly tables. The low lighting and live music adds romance to the air, and hot buttered rum, Hot Apple Pie drinks and Sun Valley Margaritas soothe worn-out skiers.

SLEIGH RIDES TO TRAIL CREEK CABIN

If you’re looking for a magical winter experience, then take a dinner sleigh to Trail Creek Cabin. Feel free to sing, “Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we go,” as the horse-drawn sleigh pulls you for half an hour through the fresh snow. Snuggled under a blanket, you’ll begin to see the lighted windows of a log cabin, your destination. Inside, you’ll enjoy a hot, savory dinner.

Everything on the menu will sound delicious: Brass Ranch Meatloaf, Grilled New York Steak, Grilled Steelhead Trout, stuffed Acorn Squash and more. Each entrée is served with steamy soup, warm bread, creamy mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Between Chocolate Fondue for Two and Warm Caramelized Apple Crisp, it will be hard to retreat back into the snowy sled. Even so, the distant twinkling lights of Sun Valley will lure you home.

TRAILING OF THE SHEEP FESTIVAL

Shepherding isn’t just an ancient livelihood or a Biblical pastime. In fact, it’s a real part of Idahoan heritage. Every autumn, the award-winning Trailing of the Sheep Festival honors the tradition of sheep ranching in Idaho and the west. Every fall for 150 years, sheepherders in the region have been driving their sheep through the Wood River Valley, moving their herds from summer pastures in the mountains to milder lowland areas for winter grazing and lambing. The sheep used for the trials have only lived with their guardian sheepherder and dogs for months, so they provide the border collies with a unique challenge.

One of the highlights of the festival is the Sheep Parade. Onlookers witness 2,000 sheep waddle down Main Street in Ketchum! The main event is the sheepdog championship trials, but guests can also participate in gourmet cooking, felting and photography workshops. Peruvian and Oinkari Basque dancers entertain, as do Boise Highlander bagpipers. After attending sheep shearing, spinning and weaving demonstrations, you’ll get a real understanding of the art of sheepherding!

WAGON DAYS

Toward the end of each summer, Ketchum celebrates its past at Wagon Days with western style. With a weekend packed with activities, you’ll return home with a camera full of pictures and the strange desire to don a bonnet or cowboy hat.

The Big Hitch Parade is the main event. A non-motorized parade, a line of wagons, buggies and stagecoaches will move through town. The Grand Finale pulls out all the stops with Lewis Ore Wagons. Traditionally pulled by a 20-mule jerk line, these freight wagons are the best preserved and functioning ones in existence.

Between these two primary events, Ketchum becomes a town of square dancing, antique shows, rodeos, pancake breakfasts, car auctions, live music and crafts. Yeehaw!

FRENCHMAN'S GULCH WINERY

If you want to pick up a bottle of wine, then find one at Frenchman’s Gulch Winery instead of the local grocery. The philosophy of this family-run business is to “bring the best grapes to the coolest place,” and hand-crafting each barrel means these wine-lovers have an intimate knowledge of each barrel they produce. Silky tannins and balance define their wax-dipped bottles of red wine, which benefit from the high altitude environment. Buy a couple bottles or an entire case – the ripe taste is worth every cent.

MAIN ST. MARKET

If you need a snack, want to cook a healthy dinner or need your gluten-free fix, then stop by Main St. Market. It stocks a host of local Idaho brands which you might not be able to find elsewhere. Steph’s Seriously Good Salsa speaks for itself, and Ballard Cheese produces tempting varieties such as Truffle Salt Cheddar and Idaho White Cheddar. You can get your Sockeye salmon cheaper here than in a restaurant, and a large selection of wine and bubbly will keep you warm on a chilly night.

Did we mention there’s a café/deli onsite? The menu items are packed full of veggies and freshness. The long list of soups is perfect for a snowy day, too!
